A radiant, bright white smile is an accessory that will never go out of style. Unfortunately, though, many people dislike the color of their teeth; they may find that their smile has a noticeable yellow tint. What causes yellow teeth in Colorado Springs, and how can you brighten up your look? Let’s talk about the answers to those important questions.

Genetics

Many people are surprised to learn that teeth are not naturally white. In fact, it is normal for them to be gray or slightly yellow. For some people, the color of the teeth is subtle enough that the teeth appear white. For others, the natural color of their teeth is dark enough that it is easy for onlookers to notice it. If you see that other members of your family have teeth that are colored similarly to yours, your DNA might be at least partially responsible for the way your smile looks.

Dentin

Teeth are made up of multiple layers. The outer layer, the enamel, is slightly translucent. If it is thin, it can be easy to notice the color of the second layer of the teeth, which is known as dentin. Since dentin is usually yellow, it can give your smile a somewhat dingy appearance. Thin enamel can be caused by a number of things, such as genetics, teeth grinding, overconsumption of acidic foods and beverages, and more.

Stains

Tooth enamel is porous, which means that pigments from your favorite drinks and snacks can seep into it, causing it to become discolored. Coffee, tomato products, berries, and red wine are just a few popular items that can contribute to stains. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are also major causes of dental stains.

What You Can Do

If you struggle with yellow teeth, talk to your cosmetic dentist. They can help your smile to look its best! They might recommend one or more of the following ways to brighten up your teeth:

  • Teeth whitening treatment. Whether it is done in your dentist’s office or with a professional take-home kit, a teeth whitening treatment has the potential to brighten your teeth by several shades within a short period of time.
  • Veneers or bonding. Veneers and dental bonding can cover severe dental discoloration, making teeth appear white. They can also make other alterations to your smile’s appearance. For example, they can disguise chips and cracks.
  • Oral hygiene adjustments. Switching to a whitening toothpaste, drinking plenty of water, and making other small adjustments to your routine may help to prevent new surface stains from forming on your teeth.
  • Avoiding staining substances. Quitting smoking, as well as cutting back on dark foods and beverages, can prevent new stains on your teeth and contribute to a brighter appearance.

Yellow teeth are nothing to be ashamed of, but if you dislike the way they look, your cosmetic dentist is ready to help you achieve a whiter, more radiant smile.
