Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Some common reasons for tooth extractions include:

  • Severe decay, infection, or damage can make a tooth impossible to save with traditional treatments, leading to the need for an extraction.
  • Advanced gum disease sometimes damages the jawbone, causing teeth to become loose and necessitating removal.
  • Overcrowding in the mouth may require tooth extraction to create space before orthodontic treatment or denture placement.
  • One of a child’s baby teeth may not have fallen out on its own. Removing it can promote the health of incoming adult teeth.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth can threaten the health of nearby tissue and may need to be extracted.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

When you arrive for your tooth extraction, our team will first numb the area with a local anesthetic to promote your comfort throughout the procedure. You might feel a bit of pressure during your appointment, but there should be no real pain. Once you are fully numb, we will use an instrument called an elevator to lift the tooth out of its socket. Then, we will grip it with forceps and wiggle it to break the connective tissues keeping it in place. After the tooth is removed, we will place gauze on the site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form.

Most patients feel normal within a week or so of their tooth extraction procedure. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to promote healing and minimize discomfort:

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods and stay hydrated; avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods.
  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed.
  • Brush gently around the extraction site; be very careful not to disturb the blood clot.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
  • Keep your head elevated when you lie down.
  • Call us if you experience any unusual pain or other concerning symptoms.
  • Attend all recommended follow-up appointments with our team so you can pursue timely tooth replacement and prevent future oral health complications.

Factors That Can Affect Tooth Extraction Cost

The cost of an extraction procedure can vary based on a number of factors, including the following:

  • The Number of Teeth that Need to Be Removed: Logically, removing multiple teeth in a single appointment costs more than removing just one. However, multiple extractions at the same time are often more affordable than getting teeth removed during separate appointments.
  • The Specific Teeth That Require Extraction: Certain teeth, such as molars and wisdom teeth, can be more challenging to remove due to their size or position. These cases may require additional time and expertise, which can affect pricing.
  • The Overall Complexity of Your Case: The need for a simple versus surgical extraction will influence the cost. More complex cases, such as impacted teeth or broken tooth roots, may involve surgical intervention or specialized care, which can increase the final fee. In some cases, we even refer patients to nearby specialists for surgical tooth extractions.
  • Additional Care: Any necessary preparatory or follow-up treatment, such as anesthesia, dental imaging, or tooth replacement options like implants or bridges, will add to the total cost of your procedure.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Tooth Extractions?

In most cases, yes, dental insurance does cover tooth extractions. Simple (non-surgical) extractions are classified as a minor procedure in many cases, so up to 80% of their cost might be covered. Surgical extractions may be around 50% covered. Our team welcomes all PPO insurance, and we are in-network with a few popular plans. We will be happy to help you figure out how you can use your benefits to your greatest advantage.

Other Options for Making Tooth Extractions Affordable

Outside of insurance, other provisions that could make it easier to afford tooth extractions include:

  • Our In-House Membership Plan. In exchange for a reasonable fee, you can sign up for our membership plan. It covers preventive care and comes with a discount on most other services, including tooth extractions.
  • We work with CareCredit, a third-party lender, to provide low-interest and no-interest payment plans for our patients. The application process is fast, and most patients are readily approved for an installment arrangement that fits their budget.
