Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Some common reasons for tooth extractions include:

  • Severe decay, infection, or damage can make a tooth impossible to save with traditional treatments, leading to the need for an extraction.
  • Advanced gum disease sometimes damages the jawbone, causing teeth to become loose and necessitating removal.
  • Overcrowding in the mouth may require tooth extraction to create space before orthodontic treatment or denture placement.
  • One of a child’s baby teeth may not have fallen out on its own. Removing it can promote the health of incoming adult teeth.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth can threaten the health of nearby tissue and may need to be extracted.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

When you arrive for your tooth extraction, our team will first numb the area with a local anesthetic to promote your comfort throughout the procedure. You might feel a bit of pressure during your appointment, but there should be no real pain. Once you are fully numb, we will use an instrument called an elevator to lift the tooth out of its socket. Then, we will grip it with forceps and wiggle it to break the connective tissues keeping it in place. After the tooth is removed, we will place gauze on the site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form.

Most patients feel normal within a week or so of their tooth extraction procedure. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to promote healing and minimize discomfort:

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods and stay hydrated; avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods.
  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed.
  • Brush gently around the extraction site; be very careful not to disturb the blood clot.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
  • Keep your head elevated when you lie down.
  • Call us if you experience any unusual pain or other concerning symptoms.
  • Attend all recommended follow-up appointments with our team so you can pursue timely tooth replacement and prevent future oral health complications.
